A Reflective Journey Through Educator Growth and Leadership

A Reflective Journey Through Educator Growth and Leadership

Written by Dr. Margaret Alvarez, Senior Vice President International Schools

Recently, I had the honor of reviewing a wonderful leadership resource written by Sandra Sheppard, Elementary Principal at The International School of Yangon, a WASC accredited school.

Using different types of shoes as a metaphor for different stages in an educator’s professional development journey, Sandra outlines her personal experience as a leader, shares challenges, highlights important leadership resources and encourages the reader to reflect on their practice.

The core message that teacher professional growth is most powerful when teacher driven, geared to the context in which the teacher works and is thoughtfully supported by administration is a key leitmotif that permeates and connects each chapter.

As an accreditor I particularly appreciated the references to the importance of flexibility, meaningful engagement not just compliance, empowerment and ownership, reflective practice and the importance of fostering a culture of continuous learning- all of which resonate with the philosophy that underpins WASC accreditation.

Check out the chapter on stilettos- a reminder to all of us in these times of uncertainty that change is inevitable but that with wisdom, support  and the right tools we can turn change into a powerful force for the greater good.
